Rubens Rule

4NT is a contract that could (should) have made but didn’t, even after the SJ lead.

everyone else played 3NT on their combined 30-count with no fit. Looks like West should have signed off over 3H but East could have the perfect maximum, say

AKJx, QJx, QJx, xxx

This is a trick one claim in the 33-point 6NT that the field will reach. Drop a jack and slam is still okay, though not great.

There is no way round this. West has to play the odds and bid 3NT. West was lucky that 4NT was a good spot after the spade lead. The SK could have been on the other side, partner’s queen could have been clubs, not hearts, etc.

Rubens said something like “Move towards slam if it will be laydown opposite the perfect minimum.”
